THE MERITS OF THE NIGHT OF DESTINY

Laylat al-Qadr, also known as the Night of destiny or Night of Power, holds immense importance in the Islamic calendar. It's considered the holiest night, surpassing the virtue of a thousand months. Muslims believe this is the night the first verses of the Holy Quran were revealed to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) by Angel Jibril.

Introduction

“We have sent it (this Qur’an) down in the Night of Qadr. And what may let you know what the Night of Qadr is. The Night of Qadr is much better than one thousand months. The angels and the Spirit (Jibril) descend in it, with the leave of your Lord, along with every command.  Peace it is till the debut of dawn.” [Al-Qadr 1-5]

Understanding the Night of Destiny

Laylat al-Qadr translates to "Night of Power" or "Night of Decree." It signifies the night when the Quran, the holy book of Islam, descended from heaven. This momentous event marked the beginning of divine revelation for Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

  • Imam Ibn al-Qayyim: He emphasizes the importance of striving for Laylat al-Qadr with utmost sincerity and devotion. He recommends devoting oneself entirely to worship during this night, seeking forgiveness, and expressing gratitude to Allah (SWT).
  • Imam An-Nawawi: His teachings encourage Muslims to actively seek this night through increased worship and focus on spiritual development. He highlights the importance of engaging in specific prayers, such as the Night Prayer (Tahajjud), and reciting particular Quranic verses and supplications known to hold special significance during this blessed night.

  • "Alhamdulillah li rabbil alameen (All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds)"
  • "SubhanakAllahumma wa bihamdika (Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise be to You)"
  • Allahumma innaka 'afuwwun tuhibbul 'afwa fa'fu 'anni (O Allah, You are the Most Forgiving, and You love forgiveness; so forgive me)
  • Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan waqina 'adhaban-nar (Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire)
  • Allahumma inni as'aluka ridaaka wal-jannata wa a'udhu bika min sakhatika wan-nari (O Allah, I ask You for Your pleasure and for Paradise, and I seek refuge in You from Your anger and the Hellfire)

The experiences and lessons learned during Laylat al-Qadr should not be confined to a single night. Muslims can utilize this momentum to establish long-term strategies for continuous spiritual growth.
